The Scientists are creating a latest ultrathin lens that could take to smart phones as thin as a credit card.

The latest lens is flat, distortion-free and so little that more than 1,500 must fit across the width of a human hair – capable in the future of replacing lenses in apps starting from cell phones to cameras to fiber-optic communication systems.

In a study published in journal Nano Letters, Federico Capasso and colleagues tell that the lenses utilized to focus light in eyeglasses, microscopes and other products utilize the similar basic technology dating to the late 1200s, that spectacle lenses were introduced in Europe.

Existing lenses are not thin or flat enough to take off distortions, like spherical aberration, astigmatism and coma, which obstruct the creation of a sharp image.

Revision of those distortions needs complex solutions, like as multiple lenses which increase weight and get up space. To overcome these challenges, the scientists search to evolve a new superthin, flat lens.

Though the latest lens is ultra-thin, it has a resolving power which truly near the theoretical limits set by the laws of optics.

The lens surface is patterned with tiny metallic stripes that bend light various as one moves away from the centre, results the beam to sharply focus without distorting the images.

The present version of the lens functions at a specific design wavelength, but the scientists say it can be redesigned for utilized with broad-band light.
