Apple has an wide history of stacking up patents.

According Patently Apple statements, patent has filed by the company, that particularize a new manner of retail packaging which permits it to transform into a docking station for iOS devices(iPad and iPhone).
Thus to the Patently Apple, “It appears that Apple is seriously thinking of taking their iDevice retail packaging to the next level, Transformer style. Apple’s invention is all about providing for packaging with multiple uses and functions after opening. In one embodiment, the packaging includes a base and a removable lid. The base converts into being a docking station for the iDevice.”
The lid as displayed in the image is intend to conformed an items (iPod touch or an iPhone).
The article states, “In particular, the dimensions of packaging could alternatively be sized to accommodate portable entertainment devices such as an MP3 player or smart phone, computer tablets such as the iPad or any other suitable device one wishes to both package and display.”
When Apple does utilize this technology, one would certainly have much more exploits for the packaging than simply leave it in a place for an unknown amount of time.

Also the patent details “circuits, methods and apparatus” which can permits the sports equipment to write data to a media player. And it displays cardio equipment, has diagrams to display how the interface can work with a treadmill.
The patent shows a 30-pin connector, so it looks like the treadmill would permits users to play media from users iPhone or iPod simply by hooking user device up to a dock.
Also the patent displays that the treadmill would study user information and adjust its settings. It could make records of user workout and have them stored on user iDevice. This would not only be useful in keeping track of users workouts but also to share with friends on their iDevices or the social networks.
Already Apple has pillaged into the fitness world earlier with the Nike+ application, launched in 2006, that started out as a chip in users shoe which would join to users iPod wirelessly and gather information on user run, such as the pace, distance and more.
